[09:49:34] Chat session automatically redirected to Jeff
[09:49:58] Jeff says: Hello! May I help you?
[09:50:08] jay says: Jeff yes.
[09:50:17] jay says: I was interested in your service
[09:50:25] jay says: in other words me servicing backups
[09:50:46] jay says: what do I need to get and how do the licences work?
[09:51:47] Jeff says: OK, how many users do you want to service?
[09:52:49] Jeff says: Licenses are sold in lots of 10,25,50,100, and 250. The
material in the business kit is all the same.
[09:52:16] jay says: Well I want to start out in the businees sending out material
[09:53:51] jay says: Ok so 50
[09:54:05] jay says: but what about the amount of data I backup
[09:54:06] Jeff says: Our software backs up to a hard drive. We don't recommend
tapes, but a lot of our providers use CDs.
[09:54:35] jay says: So I need to back up the customers data to my harddrive
[09:55:01] Jeff says: Well, that's where it goes initally. Most people leave it
there and make periodic CDs as backups.
[09:55:47] jay says: But how do I back up lets say 80 gigs to my harddrive?
[09:56:18] jay says: Say I back up 50 people I don't have 50 x80 gig on my drive
[09:57:33] Jeff says: The software compresses to about 1/5 size before sending to
your Server, so you gain a lot of storage there.
[09:58:00] Jeff says: Plus, most backups are about 10 meg, so that's not very much.
[09:58:37] jay says: but say if the customer wants to back up his whole machine of
80 gigs every night
[09:59:44] Jeff says: Our software WILL do that, but of course it isn't practical
given drive sizes and bandwidth. Nobody in our network is backing up whole drives. In
fact, nobody ANYWHERE is backing up entire drives over the 'net.
[10:00:35] jay says: I know. But do I charge based on data I back up? Because why
wouldn't the customer want to back up everything if he can.
[10:01:20] Jeff says: Yes, you charge for data files only. And our system has a
quota feature that keeps them from backing up a massive amount of files.
[10:01:57] jay says: Ok so you are only backing up based on a quota agreed to with
the customer before hand
[10:02:13] Jeff says: Yes.
[10:02:23] jay says: Now lets say I use your RBS system
[10:02:55] jay says: How can I restore someones machine if it crashes?
[10:03:23] Jeff says: That's easy. The client software has a restore wizard that is
really cool.
[10:03:51] jay says: so they need to reinstall their os and then the client the do
restore?
[10:04:06] Jeff says: Yes, that's the best way.
[10:04:32] jay says: So how much is the 50 licence
[10:04:45] Jeff says: Unless we have a sale going on, the price is $899
[10:05:03] jay says: what equipment would I need at home?
[10:05:15] jay says: I have a couple of servers with cable
[10:05:23] jay says: and a couple of nic cards
[10:05:31] Jeff says: Standard computer, as big a hard drive as you can manage,
cable modem is perfect
[10:05:53] jay says: And I would be able to fit 50 licences on my machine
[10:06:09] Jeff says: How big is your hard drive?
[10:06:15] jay says: 30 gig
[10:06:39] jay says: the other 40gig
[10:07:26] Jeff says: Usually we allocate 1 gig per client, but you only need 50 gig
if you have 50 active clients.
[10:08:01] jay says: does the client need to know my ip address
[10:08:22] Jeff says: No. We provide a DNS service that keeps track of your dynamic
IP.
[10:08:30] jay says: I have a domain name backuptoday.com
[10:08:41] Jeff says: WOW That's a GREAT one!
[10:08:53] Jeff says: But, you'll want your website there, not your RBS Server.
[10:09:24] jay says: The client doesn't need to know my domain name?
[10:09:55] Jeff says: No. You'll want to advertize it, for marketing purposes, but
the client will contact you at a host name.
[10:10:53] jay says: How do I go about marketing the service and how much do I
charge or what is the average
[10:11:42] Jeff pushes URL: http://remote-backup.com/settingprices.h
tm
[10:11:53] Jeff says: Here, I've sent you a page about setting prices.
[10:12:46] jay says: Ok thanks I will look into it.
